"VS" Series - Modular
Catch Cans

Application Notes
How To Order
A few years ago, we introduced a
new catch can
design
that
is quite different from anything else available. The design is based on
proven coalescence and gas separation principles, and takes advantage
of a special filter material that is designed specifically to remove
oil aerosols down to 5 microns or less, while maintaining a very low
pressure drop. After tens of thousands of miles logged on hundreds of
different vehicles, these cans continue to work as well or even
better than expected in a wide range of applications.
Based on the success of the original design, we
are now
offering the "VS" series of catch cans. While maintaining the
performance of the original cans, the new cans offer more flexibility
and options, and can be more specifically tailored to individual needs.
Like the original, these cans are designed to be tied to a source of
vacuum (typically a turbo inlet) for best performance;
but they can also now be configured to operate as a
traditional open-breather type of can if desired. This is possible due
to a new modular design, which allows the filter to be removed and
replaced with different filter types and/or connections.
Although different
configurations are available, all of these cans use the
same basic design for the inlet (or outlet) filter. The
standard filter element is a custom manufactured fiber-resin material,
capable of removing particles down to 5 microns or lower. This
element is capped and then attached to an aluminum plate, which is
assembled to the can body with machine screws and sealed with a Buna-N
gasket.
In addition, the dual-chambered
cans (pictured at left; see "VS3"
below) utilize a bonded aluminum mesh
material on the inlets, to provide coarse filtration and liquid
separation as the flow first enters the can.
We currently offer three
different
styles
of this catch can, each with their own unique characteristics and
configuration options. The following sections will describe each style
in detail, along with all of the options available.
|
- Cans are hand-built from extruded
6063 aluminum,
1/8" wall thickness...no crappy sheetmetal here! Top and bottom plates
are TIG welded 6061 aluminum,
- Integrated baffling, and removable
filter modules
- AN inlet/outlet ports standard
- 1/4" female NPT drain port (Threaded opening only, plug not included. See optional drain valve below).
- Replaceable "boiler style" level indicator with
reflector,
or optional 3" sight tube
- 3/16" thick welded mounting bracket with two
1/4"
mounting holes
- Each can is hand-built in the USA and inspected
prior
to shipping
- Buffed finish is standard
In addition to specific
options for each can type, we also offer the following on all
of the
VS cans:
Drain
Valve
|
All
of the VS series cans come with
an open 1/4" NPT female drain port, but for an addtional $8 we can also
include a 90* positive-lock brass drain valve.
Note: If room for
the
valve is tight, you can put an elbow/barb nipple on the can
and mount the valve remotely using a custom bracket or zip tie.
|
Sight
Tube
|
For
the VS3 (and VS1 cans that are 6" tall),
the standard round sight glass can be replaced with a 3" sight tube for
an additional charge. This sight tube offers more visibility
than the round glass, at the expense of adding a bit of weight.
Note:
The outer
guard can be removed for even more visibility if desired. Carefully
remove the bolts and slip the guard off, and then re-insert
the
bolts with the o-rings between the bolt head and body of the tube. |
Breathers
|
The standard filter module can
be replaced
with a 3/4 NPT mounting plate and foam breather,
allowing the
cans to function as traditional open (non-sealed) cans. The breather has 3/4 NPT
threads, and screws into a female port on the filter mounting plate.
The element is accesible for cleaning or replacement by removing the
outer plastic cover from the breather body.
We
can also build custom breather setups, as long as there is room for the
inlet lines and fittings to be installed and tightened.
Note: Be
sure to check and clean the filter element often!
|
Powder
Coating
|
We can now
offer powder coating on these catch cans. It is done during production
before the filters are assembled, to avoid any damage from the heat. For
most
single-step colors, the cost is $45 to $50, and all common RAL colors are
available. For translucent, candy, and other "exotic" multi-process
finishes, the
cost is $55 to $60 depending on availability,
etc.
The powders are supplied by Tiger
Coatings
and IFS
Coatings; check out online sites for colors, textures, etc.,
and send us a specific color code if possible. Please note
that what you see on a computer may not match the true color, so
samples from local PC shops are the best source to see what different
colors and textures will actually look like.
On average, powder-coating will add about 1-2 weeks to the ETA.

The
VS1 is a small, single inlet/single outlet can with a removable filter
module on top. It is ideal for filtering the line between the PCV valve
and intake manifold, which normally sees a fairly low
amount of airflow and pressure, or for any application where a simple,
small capacity can would be a good choice.
The VS1 dimensions are 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 4" tall,
and it comes with
male -8AN inlet and outlet
fittings, a round sight window, and a welded mounting bracket. The
inlet/outlet size can be changed if desired, and the height
can be changed to 6 inches.
With
the standard configuration of the VS1, the filter module on top is
the inlet, and the baffled port on the right side is the outlet.
However, if the filter module is replaced with an external
breather and the inlet line moved to the
side, it will function
as a traditional open, non-sealed catch can.
The
outlet, sight window, and bracket can usually be relocated to other
places on the can's body if necessary, although there may be a small additional charge.

The
VS2 is the new and improved version of the original dual-inlet can. The
top inlets are part of a dual-filter module that can be
removed for inspection or cleaning should the need ever arise. The
outlet is a single baffled port on the can's side.
The VS2 dimensions are 3" x 5" x 6" tall,
and it comes with
male -8AN inlets, a -10AN outlet, a round sight window, and a welded
mounting bracket. The
inlet/outlet size can be changed if desired, and dual outlet ports can
be located on the front rather than a single outlet on the
side as an option.
NOTE:
The VS2 is designed for applications where engine blow-by is relatively
dry, on stock to mild engines. For heavily modified
engines, ethanol fuels, and more versatility, the VS3 shown below
is recommended.
The picture at right shows the standard VS2 can.
The outlet, sight
window, and bracket can usually be moved to other sides of the can's
body if necessary, although there may be a small additional charge.
With
the standard configuration of the VS2, the dual filter modules on top
are
the inlets, and the baffled port on the right side is the outlet.
However, if the filter module is replaced with external
breathers and dual ports are added to the
front (which become the inlets), it will function
as a traditional open, non-sealed catch can.
The picture at left shows a VS2 with two -10AN
inlets on the front, and a dual breather module on top instead of the standard internal filters.

This is our
most popular and versatile can. It works well with almost any setup,
and can be more easily modified for different configurations than the VS2.
The
VS3 is a dual-chambered design that has two fixed inlets, and a modular
filtered outlet. Air enters a chamber on the left that is filled with a
coarse, bonded aluminum media which removes the majority of suspended liquids and larger
particles, and then flows out of the
can through the filter on the outlet which further filters the air to
remove smaller particles. Although the VS3 provides slightly less
filtering than the VS2, the dual-chamber design makes it a good
choice for setups that have a lot of blowby with
suspended liquids, or for those running ethanol-blended fuels
in
colder climates.
The VS3 dimensions are 3" x 5" x 6" tall,
and it comes with
male -8AN inlets, a -10AN outlet, a round sight window, and a welded
mounting bracket.
The picture at right shows the standard VS3
can. The sight window and bracket can usually be relocated to other
places on the can's body if necessary, although there may be a small additional charge. The
inlet/outlet size can be changed if desired, and some variation of the
inlet position is possible...but the inlets and outlets must remain on the top plate.
Like the VS1 and VS2, the filter
module can be replaced with an external
breather, and it will function
as a traditional open, non-sealed catch can.
The picture at left shows a VS3 with two
-10AN
inlets, a breather module, and the
optional 3" sight tube in place of the standard round sight window. |

- If you use aluminum fittings, BE
ABSOLUTELY SURE to use a paste-type anaerobic thread sealer
on all NPT threads. If you
don't, you will weld the fittings to the aluminum can due to
galling. (Teflon tape is ok for the drain fitting, but not
recommended
for anything else). For AN fittings, use a bit of machine oil on the
threads, but no sealer.
- The sight glass is made from a polyamide
technopolymer plastic with an internal NBR seal. It should work with no
problems in the most extreme engine bay conditions, but if for some
reason it becomes clouded or fails in some way, it can be easily
replaced. Please let us know if anything like this ever happens.
- Raw unpolished aluminum is likely to oxidize and turn
a dull grayish color over time. If so, you can buff the cans with some
fine steel wool and/or polish to restore the finish.
- On the VS1 and VS2 cans, you may notice that there is
an internal baffle very
close to the outlet port. This is by design...the baffle is there to
direct airflow through the filter, rather than allowing the air to take
a direct path to the outlet. Even with just an 1/8" gap between the
baffle and the outlet, the cross sectional area for air to enter the
outlet is still quite a bit more than the area through the inlet, so it
doesn't restrict the flow like you might think. (Air in the can will
presumably always be under some higher pressure than the outlet, and
will find it's way out regardless).
- The
VS1 is meant for low airflow applications; specifically, between the intake manifold
and valve cover, in the PCV valve line. It helps keep oil out of the IM during
off-boost (vac) conditions.
The VS2 is designed for the
pressure relief side of the system while under boost; two lines coming
off the VC into the can, and one line going to the turbo inlet to pull
air through the filters. It has a coalescing filter on each input and
offers the most filtering, but will clog more easily if the blowby
contains liquids.
The VS3 is similar to the VS2, but is
designed with coarse filtering on the inlets, and a single coalescing
filter on the outlet. It has slightly less filtering capability than
the VS2, but is much less likely to clog. - The VS2 is used
primarily when the blow-by is "dry"; mostly just hot air. If you are
pushing liquid or heavy vapor out of the VC, or run E85 (especially in
cool weather), then the VS3 is a better choice since it has a coarse
pre-filter on the inlets which removes most of the heavier suspended
liquids. They both do a good job of removing oil from the airflow, but
the VS2 is more susceptible to clogging if you are dumping liquid into
those two inlet filters. On the other hand, you pretty much have to
overfill and abuse the VS3 to clog it up, at the expense of a little
less filtering capability. The VS3 is also a little more flexible with more configuration options.
- If you don't specify the drain valve option, you will need to provide your own plug or fitting for the drain!
